Dear
Artist,
Sooke
Region Museum has embarked on a new enterprise
Fine Arts Unlimited
In
line with our longtime objective of drawing attention
to art and artists of the region, and of creating opportunities
for bringing together in mutual interest, artists and
the many who enjoy the viewing and/or acquiring of art,
we have established a new initiative.
An
Upper Gallery expansion of our gift shop at the museum
has provided an opportunity that allows us to invite
artists from throughout the region to submit work for
adjudication and potential presentation in the new gallery.
As in our previous Fine Arts initiatives, submissions
are being accepted for adjudication from residents within
the Capital Regional District (Gulf Islands to Port
Renfrew). Each month the presentations offered in the
gallery change. Artists have the opportunity that their
work may be chosen as part of the presentation offered
for sale in the gallery during a month long showing.
During 2007, the presentations will be opened on these
dates:
For
the June show Opening 7 pm - Friday, May 25
For
the July show Opening 7 pm - Friday, June 29
For
the August show Opening 7 pm - Friday, July 27
For
the September show Opening 7 pm - Friday, August 31
For
the October show Opening 7 pm - Friday, September
28
The
gallery presentations with artists' works offered
for sale are planned to re-open in the spring of 2008,
and run through to the end of the summer.
The
submission form accompanying this announcement provides
details for artists who may wish to submit a portfolio
of their representative recent works for adjudication
by the three experienced jurors appointed by the Sooke
Region Museum. On the basis of viewing the portfolio,
the jury may select the submitting artist and offer
the opportunity of placing comparable works in the giftshop
gallery. If an artist is offered that opportunity, the
jury will suggest a month for that particular artist's
work to be shown for sale, in conjunction with the work
of one or several other artists.
A wine and cheese type reception will be provided for
each of the show openings, along with media promotion.
On a daily basis, the museum is open 9 am to 5 pm. A
calendar listing the names and art medium of the artists
showing works will be made available as soon as this
can be finalized. The art calendar will also be presented
on our website, which is currently under re-development.
The museum will charge a commission on sales, and in
line with the museum's policies, the commission will
be modest.
To
be clear, the work submitted in the portfolio is not
necessarily the work the artist would place in the show,
but is indicative of the standard of work created by
the artist. There is no charge for the jury to view
the portfolio, which may be submitted via photographs,
email or hand-delivered portfolio to be left at the
museum for adjudication.
If
interest is demonstrated, an art market opportunity
could be offered in our pavilion during the summer.
We
at the Sooke Region Museum welcome many thousands of
visitors each year, from near and far, and we are excited
about the vibrant art season ahead of us. We look forward
to having you with us in this celebration of art! Best
wishes from the Board of Directors and the Committee
for Fine Arts Unlimited.
Sincerely
Elida
